How Long Does Invisalign Really Take? Truro Dentist Explains

invisalign treatment

It’s the second question almost every Invisalign patient asks (right after “how much?”): how long is this going to take?  The honest answer is “it depends”, but that’s not very helpful on its own.

In this guide, we’ll give you a realistic picture: typical treatment time, what makes it shorter or longer, what happens at each stage of the journey, and what to expect once your aligners come off for good.

By the end, you’ll know roughly what to expect, and what’s actually within your control.

How long does Invisalign take? The short answer

For most adults, Invisalign takes between 6 and 18 months from first alignment to final retainer. Minor adjustments can take as little as a few months, while more complex cases may take longer. Where you land in that range depends on a few key things, case complexity, how disciplined you are with wear time, and the type of treatment your case needs.

Let’s break those down.

What affects how long Invisalign takes?

A few factors do most of the work in deciding your timeline.

1. How much your teeth need to move

This is the single biggest factor. Closing a small gap between two front teeth is fast, sometimes only a few months. Correcting a more involved case with multiple concerns takes longer. The greater the movement required, the more aligners you’ll need, and the more time the treatment will take.

2. The complexity of your case

Invisalign can address a wide range of common orthodontic concerns, including:

  • Crowding
  • Spacing between teeth
  • Mild to moderate bite discrepancies (overbite, underbite, crossbite)
  • Teeth that have shifted following previous orthodontic treatment

A simple case sits at the shorter end of the timeline. A more complex case with multiple concerns sits at the longer end. Each case is assessed individually, and recommendations are based on clinical suitability, long-term stability, and how predictable the outcome will be.

3. Your wear-time discipline

This is the one thing that’s entirely in your hands. Invisalign aligners are designed to be worn around 22 hours a day, essentially everything except eating, drinking anything other than cool water, and brushing your teeth.

Patients who keep their aligners religiously typically finish on schedule. Patients who slip into wearing them less find their treatment dragging on by weeks or even months. If you’ve ever wondered why two patients with similar starting positions finish at different times, this is almost always why.

4. Your biology

Some people’s teeth simply move faster than others. Bone density, age, and individual response to pressure all play a role. There’s nothing you can do about this, and it usually only adds or subtracts a small amount of time at most.

What happens at each stage of treatment

Here’s what your Invisalign journey looks like from start to finish at Dental Logic Truro.

Stage 1: Free consultation

First, you’ll have a 15-minute consultation with one of our experienced dentists. We’ll look at your teeth, discuss what’s possible, give you an idea of how long it might take, and explain costs and payment options. No commitment, and no pressure.

Stage 2: Full assessment and 3D scan

If you decide to go ahead, the next appointment is the proper clinical workup, a full clinical examination, photos, and a detailed 3D digital scan of your teeth and bite. This replaces the messy traditional impressions of the past and gives us a precise digital model to plan from.

Stage 3: Treatment plan and preview

This is where Invisalign genuinely shines. We use your scan to map every tooth movement, stage by stage, and we’ll show you a digital simulation of your finished smile before you commit to anything. You see exactly where you’re starting, where you’re going to end up, and what the journey looks like in between. If you’d like adjustments to the plan, this is the time to ask.

Stage 4: Aligners arrive, first fitting

Once your plan is approved, your aligners are manufactured. At your fitting appointment we make sure the first set fits properly, attach any small tooth-coloured “attachments” if needed (these help the aligners grip and apply pressure precisely), and walk you through how to wear and care for them.

Stage 5: Active aligner treatment.

You wear each aligner for the period set out in your treatment plan, then move on to the next one in the series. You’ll come in for short review appointments throughout treatment to make sure everything is moving as planned. Most patients find this stage settles into a comfortable routine within a few weeks.

Stage 6: Refinements (if needed)

Towards the end of your main aligner series, we’ll review the result against the original plan. If small touch-ups are needed to fine-tune the finish, we’ll fit in a short series of refinement aligners. They’re not a sign that something has gone wrong; they’re how we make sure the finish matches the plan.

Stage 7: Whitening

We provide free whitening at the end of your treatment while you give time for your teeth to settle at the end of the treatment. This normally costs at least £350, offering a great way to demonstrate your new smile.

Stage 8: Retainers – Protecting your new smile

Once treatment is complete, retainers hold your teeth in their new position. Without them, teeth gradually drift back. Invisalign results are designed to be long-lasting, to maintain your new smile, it’s important to wear your retainers as advised and attend regular dental check-ups.

How to make sure you finish on schedule

The single most useful thing you can do is wear your aligners as instructed, every day. Beyond that:

  • Switch to a new aligner on the schedule we set for you.
  • Don’t drink hot drinks or anything sugary with your aligners. Heat can warp the plastic, and sugar gets trapped against your teeth.
  • Keep your review of appointments. Small problems caught early to prevent bigger delays later.
  • Brush your teeth and rinse your aligners before putting them back in after meals.
  • If an aligner goes missing or breaks, ring us straight away. We can usually sort a replacement quickly without disrupting your overall plan.
